The Vulnerability Factor™
Raising emotionally open and resilient children in a world that teaches them to shut down.
Children are born emotionally open. The Vulnerability Factor™ is a framework for understanding what helps children remain open to their feelings, their relationships, and themselves as they grow.

Children Are Born Open
Children come into the world remarkably open. They cry when they're hurt. Reach for us when they're afraid. Celebrate without restraint. Ask for what they need. Their feelings move through them freely.
But as children grow, they are constantly learning something about what happens when they show us who they are and how they feel.
Is it safe to be sad?
Can I be angry and still be loved?
Can I make a mistake without losing connection?
Can I tell the truth when the truth is hard?
Over time, these experiences help shape whether a child continues to meet the world with emotional openness or begins to protect themselves by hiding, suppressing, pleasing, performing, withdrawing, or shutting down.
This is The Vulnerability Factor.
How Openness Becomes Protection
Every emotional experience carries more than the feeling itself.
A child feels something.
They experience a response from the people and world around them.
From that experience, they begin to make meaning.
And that meaning can influence whether they remain emotionally open or learn that they need to protect themselves.
The Vulnerability Factor™ Model helps us look beyond a child's behavior to understand what may be happening underneath it.
Look Beneath the Behavior
When children struggle, our attention naturally goes to the behavior we can see. The Vulnerability Factor™ Lens invites us to look deeper.
Instead of asking only, How do I stop this behavior? we begin asking:
This shift doesn't mean eliminating boundaries or fixing every difficult feeling. It means responding with greater awareness of what our children may be learning about themselves, their emotions, and their relationship with us.
Emotional Openness Is the Foundation for Resilience
Resilience isn't about teaching children not to struggle. It's about helping them discover that they can experience disappointment, frustration, sadness, fear, failure, and uncertainty without losing connection to themselves or the people who matter to them.
When children feel safe enough to experience and express what they feel, they have the opportunity to move through difficult emotions rather than learning that those emotions need to be avoided or hidden.
Our goal isn't to protect children from every hard feeling.
It's to help them become strong enough to stay open through it.
Over years of working with children, parents, and families, I began to notice a pattern. When a child was struggling, the natural instinct was often to focus on what we could see: the tears, the tantrum, the withdrawal, the defiance, the anxiety. Understandably, parents wanted to know how to make the behavior better.
But I became increasingly interested in what was happening underneath the behavior.
My background in child development and education, along with my work in parent coaching, mental fitness, attachment, and emotional regulation, kept bringing me back to a deeper question: What is a child learning about themselves and their emotions through the experiences they are having? I began to see that children aren't simply reacting to what happens to them. They are making meaning from what they feel and from the responses they experience when they express those feelings.
The Vulnerability Factor™ grew from that understanding. It offers parents a way to look beneath behavior and consider how everyday interactions can shape whether children continue to feel safe being emotionally open or begin to protect themselves by hiding, suppressing, pleasing, withdrawing, or shutting down. My hope is to help parents see these moments differently, not as opportunities to parent perfectly, but as opportunities to strengthen the connection and emotional safety that allow resilience to grow.
The Vulnerability Factor — The Book
I'm currently writing The Vulnerability Factor: Raising Emotionally Open and Resilient Children in a World That Teaches Them to Shut Down.
The book explores how children learn whether vulnerability is safe, how everyday interactions can move them toward openness or protection, and how parents can create the emotional safety children need to remain connected to their feelings and to us.
